Biography
Isabella Löhr studied philosophy and the study of culture at the University of Leipzig, Germany, where she received her doctorate in 2008 with a thesis on the global history of intellectual property ("Die Globalisierung geistiger Eigentumsrechte. Neue Strukturen internationaler Zusammenarbeit,1886-1952"). She then worked as an assistant professor for Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Heidelberg, as an assistant professor for European and Global History at the Institute for European Global Studies of the University of Basel, Switzerland, and in a project, funded by te German Federal Ministry for Education and Research on the Eastern European imprint of modern international law at the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO). Most recently, she headed the Volkswagen Foundation-funded junior research group "The Scientific Production of Knowledge on Migration" at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück. There she completed her second book on the history of student mobility, with which she completed her habilitation degree at the Philipps-Universität Marburg in summer 2021 ("Globale Bildungsmobilität 1850-1930. Von der Bekehrung der Welt zur globalen studentischen Gemeinschaft").
Researchtopic
Isabella Löhr's research focuses on European history of the 19th and 20th centuries, which she places in its manifold local, transnational and global contexts. She is particularly interested in historical migration and mobility research, the history of international law and interdisciplinary knowledge research. She approaches "Europe" from various perspectives: Her dissertation on the globalisation of intellectual property rights centres on a German-French comparison, which is placed in the reciprocal but asymmetrically structured relations between Europe and Latin America. Her habilitation thesis on the history of mobility empirically focuses on Eastern Europe and argues for understanding the parameters that characterised educational mobility in the 20th century as the result of the crisis-like realignment of Eastern European societies in the transition from empires to nation states.
Currently, she is concerned with two topics. The first is the conditions and consequences of the scholarly production of knowledge about migration. The aim is to develop reflexive perspectives on dealing with migration and difference in interdisciplinary migration research in the humanities and social sciences. Secondly, she conducts research on the global history of international law. Instead of an approach that understands international law as a universal canon of rights, the focus is on the genesis of legal norms and practices and the assumption that norms of international law are always the result of complex and bequeathed negotiation processes between actors from different regions of the world.

The Inventar der Migrationsbegriffe (Inventory of Terms and Concepts of Migration Research) presents key terms from current debates on migration and discusses their geneses, how they are used in different social spheres and how their meaning changes over time. In doing so, it pursues three goals: Firstly, the inventory contributes to greater linguistic sensitivity in current debates on migration; secondly, it provides an insight into processes of social self-understanding by illuminating the terms and bodies of knowledge used to discuss and argue about the social effects of mobility and diversity; and thirdly, it aims to motivate readers to engage in discussions on migration in an informed and reflective manner.
The inventory is a constantly growing online platform. It starts with a selection of entries, to which a new term is added every month. In this way, the inventory offers an extensive reservoir of conceptual analyses in the long term, which allow a deeper insight into the social debate on migration.

Studieren im Ausland ist heute scheinbar normal. Die meisten Programme versehen dies dabei mit dem Auftrag, internationale Verständigung zu fördern. Isabella Löhr analysiert, wie diese Verbindung von Bildungsmobilität und Verständigung im Verlauf des Ersten Weltkriegs entstand. Die Europäische Studentenhilfe war eine aus der studentischen Missionsbewegung des 19. Jahrhunderts kommende humanitäre Organisation, die ab 1920 in den Universitätsstädten im östlichen Europa tätig wurde. Sie verband Bildungsmobilität mit humanitärer Hilfe und transformierte studentische Mobilität in ein gesellschaftspolitisches Sujet, das innerhalb weniger Jahre zu einem Gegenstand bildungspolitischer Interventionen auf globaler Ebene aufrückte. Die humanitäre Sorge für Studierende diente nach dem Krieg als Modell für eine Verständigungspolitik, die ein Denken in Kategorien von Nation, Minderheiten und Rasse/race als großes Problem der Zeit ansah und das Ideal einer globalen studentischen Gemeinschaft als Lösung propagierte. Ein wesentliches Element der modernen Universitätsausbildung - Mobilität für den Wissenserwerb - wurde damit von religiösen und humanitären Handlungslogiken und Weltsichten geprägt.
