3-year doctoral contract for a PhD candidate in economics or in sociology with a project related to digital and ICT issues
Centre Marc Bloch e.V. (CMB) is the Franco-German Research Centre for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Berlin. It is both an affiliated institute of the Humboldt University of Berlin and a CNRS research unit, with an interdisciplinary and internationally-oriented profile. Since its foundation in 1992, CMB has been a model institute for European research cooperation while covering the whole range of social and human sciences, including history, sociology, political science, geography and philosophy. A detailed description of its main research poles may be found at the following URL https://cmb.hu-berlin.de/en/research/research-focuses
We are now proposing a doctoral contract of three years for prospective students with a background in economics or sociology with a doctoral dissertation project related to online communities, platforms, and more broadly information and communication technologies. This covers for instance, but is not limited to, issues dealing with work automation and algorithmic management, platform-mediated job markets or the consumer-producer dynamics of online platforms.
The selected candidate may already have arranged the organization of the academic supervision of their doctoral dissertation (i.e. they already have a PhD supervisor) at the time of application. They may also aim at being supervised by a habilitated member of the lab. Furthermore, CMB already hosts an interdisciplinary team in computational social science (http://cmb.huma-num.fr) with a specific focus on online communities and algorithmic issues, with whom fruitful interactions may be expected.
The contract is expected to start in autumn 2021. The typical successful applicant would hold a master's degree in economics, sociology, or in other related disciplines, and demonstrate a strong ability to innovate autonomously. A good command of French or German would be a plus due to the bilingual structure of CMB.
As an equal opportunities employer, CMB intends to promote women and men in the context of statutory requirements. For this reason, suitably qualified women are specifically invited to apply.
Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preferential treatment.
Application Procedure:to apply, please send the following materials by June 20, 2021 to denoyer ( at ) cmb.hu-berlin.de
