Titel der Dissertation
Black African asylum seekers and tolerated migrants in Germany and their strategies to access the job market in Berlin.
Zusammenfassung der Dissertation
My PhD research provides a general analysis of the job access strategies developed by Black Africans asylum seekers and tolerated migrants in Germany with a particular focus on Berlin. It investigates the socio-economic integration framework for Black African asylum seekers and tolerated migrants, which is highly restrictive and forces the majority of Black African asylum seekers and tolerated migrants into illegal income generation practices.
Black African asylum seekers and tolerated migrants in Berlin, who receive no work permits by the responsible authorities in Berlin (Ausländerbehörde), have in consequence no possibilities to access the formal job market. As their access to the formal job market is denied, they have developed different strategies to carry out legal or illegal work practices in Berlin whereby their strategies should be understood as a response to their survival needs.
The central question of my PhD research is: What strategies have developed Black Africans asylum seekers and tolerated migrants in Germany to access the job market in Berlin?
My research considers personal networks as one key factor of Black Africans asylum seekers and tolerated migrants in Germany to acquire jobs in Berlin, and therefore uses the Network Approach Theory as theoretical approach, for analysing the every day’s survival job strategies of this two categories of Black African migrants.
To understand the phenomenon and identify different (academic) problems, the ethno-geographical methods 1) participant observations, 2) interviews and 3) focus group discussions have been carried out in Berlin since 2016. So far, twenty individuals case studies, six semi-structured interviews and seven focus group discussions have been gathered, both with the target group itself, with the German administration officers executing work permits, and with officials from the German court.

Berlin’s KbOs (“Kriminalitätsbelastete Orte”)
In my PhD research, I followed seven individual case studies in Berlin’s KbOs (“Kriminalitätsbelastete Orte”). Through these case studies, I gathered interesting insights and became very curious about KbOs:
Due to their legal (non) status in Germany/Europe, Black Africans asylum seekers and tolerated migrants have developed various economic activities which can be categorized as legal, illegal, informal and/or criminal. In KbOs of Berlin, these various economic activities lead to confrontations with the police force as coercive body which result to many other problems. For example, the legal status in Germany of a Nyama seller (drug dealer) has been significantly influenced by a court case derived from his/her economic activity in a KbO detected by police officers. I can thus say that the forms of their economic activities and their stakes play an important role when it comes to obtaining the residence title and as a consequence also impact their possibilities to fully access the job market in Berlin/Germany but also their (social) integration.
