Panthéonisation of Marc Bloch

Scientific and public series of events in honour of Marc Bloch

Through his advocacy for the university, his writings on the dangers of disinformation, and his plea for educational reform and a peaceful world, Marc Bloch’s thinking resonates in a present marked by attacks on democratic values and the fragility of peace in Europe. His induction into the Panthéon, announced for 16 June 2026, provides an opportunity to honour his intellectual legacy and commitment.

In this context, the Centre Marc Bloch is organising a series of academic and public events from January to June 2026 to commemorate the historian and resistance fighter who gave our research centre its name.

The series includes:

  • A scientific colloquium: ‘Marc Bloch: Interwoven Stories and Franco-German Engagement’.

  • A project/competition with secondary school pupils (France/Germany) on his work and legacy.

  • An art exhibition: ‘History Seeks Its Place’ (Anaëlle Vanel).

  • A live broadcast of the Panthéon ceremony with commentary.

  • A podcast series by ‘Radio Marc Bloch’.

This series of events aims to promote Franco-German remembrance issues, raise public awareness of the role of the humanities and social sciences, and defend European values (academic freedom, the fight against disinformation).

Through his commitment to the university, his reflections on education and his vision of a peaceful world, Marc Bloch embodies responsible and committed thinking – which is more urgent today than ever before.
