Biografie

Nur Yasemin Ural is a sociologist and, since April 2025, an associate researcher at the Centre Marc Bloch, where she co-organizes the research focus on “Inequality Dynamics.” Her work focuses on secularity, religion, affect, as well as issues of belonging and minority communities in Europe. She is also an associate researcher at UMR 9022 “Héritage” (CNRS/CY Cergy Paris Université) and, since 2020, at the SFB “Affective Societies” at Freie Universität Berlin. Her PhD from EHESS Paris on burial practices of Turkish-origin minorities in Germany and France was awarded summa cum laude in 2016. Previously, she worked as a research associate at Freie Universität Berlin and the University of Leipzig. Her current research investigates the material dimensions of secularity and the affective dynamics of plural societies. Methodologically, she combines ethnographic approaches with discourse-analytical perspectives. She has taught at universities in Germany, France, and Switzerland, including Leipzig, Berlin, and St. Gallen. Her research projects have been supported by the DAAD, the American Academy of Religion, and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung. She is also actively involved in organizing international workshops and conferences. Ural is a member of the German Sociological Association and the German Association for the Study of Religion.
