Dr. Daniel Tödt
VITA
After studying European Ethnology, African Studies, and Political Science at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Freie Universität Berlin, Daniel Tödt first worked as a research associate in the Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich) 640, Representations of Changing Social Orders, at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and at the HafenCity Universität Hamburg in the degree program “Culture of the Metropolis.”
He subsequently held a postdoctoral position at the International Research Training Group Berlin – New York – Toronto The World in the City at the Center for Metropolitan Studies at the Technische Universität Berlin, and later was a fellow at the International Research Center in the Humanities (IGK) Work and the Life Course in Global History.
From July 2018 to September 2022, he taught at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin as a research associate at the Institute of Asian and African Studies and in the MA program in Global History at the Freie Universität Berlin. He then joined the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History at the Universität Konstanz as a DAAD PRIME Fellow. He was guest researcher at the CNRS-Institut des Mondes Africains in Aix-en-Provence.
In 2015, he received his PhD from the Institute of History at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin with a dissertation on the emergence of a francophone elite in the Belgian Congo and the relationship between the colonial civilizing mission and forms of global bourgeois citizenship. The dissertation received the translation prize of the ZEIT-Stiftung, awarded by the Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands. Published under the title Elitenbildung und Dekolonisierung in the series Kritische Studien zur Geschichtswissenschaft, it also received a special prize within the program “Geisteswissenschaften International.” The English translation, The Lumumba Generation, appeared in 2021.
His first monograph, Vom Planeten Mars (published in a second edition in 2013), examines urban-anthropological and pop-cultural aspects of migration and ethnicity in postcolonial France.
