Doctoral Seminar
The doctoral seminar is intended as a forum for academic exchange and provides a framework for further academic training and integration into the ( Franco-German) research landscape. It is organised by doctoral students at the Centre Marc Bloch.
The sessions focus on three main topics:
1. Presentation training
CMB doctoral candidates have the opportunity to present their current work, depending on the status of their dissertation project. The presenter can focus on a theoretical aspect of their research, the field and source work, or even the writing phase of their dissertation. It is also an opportunity to discuss the Franco-German or international dimension of the research carried out or to present an already published article and receive feedback. The aim is to encourage doctoral students to engage in critical discourse in an interdisciplinary environment and to reflect on the individual progress of their own work.
2. Further training with external speakers
The doctoral seminar is also intended to be a platform for the exchange of experiences, skills and perspectives. Participants will have the opportunity to acquire and discuss fundamental knowledge about teaching and research methods, prepare for the various stages of a doctoral programme, and gain an understanding of the practical aspects of an academic career. Possible topics include:
- Practical tips for academic writing, teaching, and publication strategies
- Discussion of methodological approaches and research traditions
- Introduction to software (data analysis, literature management)
- Planning and organising your dissertation
- Dealing with stress and writer’s block
3. Prospects after the dissertation
In addition, individual events are held as part of the doctoral seminar that address various career prospects both within and outside academia. Researchers from the CMB and external speakers provide practical insights into careers in research and fields such as science management, foundations, cultural cooperation, policy consulting and the diplomatic service.
Jonas Nickel and Hugo Zusslin are responsible for organizing the seminar.
