Biographie
Fabien Théofilakis is Associate Professor (Maître de conférences) in Contemporary History at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where he is affiliated with the Centre d’histoire sociale des mondes contemporains. His research focuses on warfare, military captivity, transitions from war to peace, Nazism, and the prosecution of Nazi war criminals.
He has been associated with the Centre Marc Bloch since the early 2000s, when he regularly worked there during his doctoral studies. His PhD was conducted in a joint supervision between Université Paris X Nanterre and the University of Augsburg and examined German prisoners of war held by France after the Second World War. Defended in 2010, the dissertation received four academic awards and was published by Fayard under the title Les prisonniers de guerre allemands. France (1944–1949), a German translation is currently in preparation.
After completing his ATER position, Fabien Théofilakis carried out postdoctoral research at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) and subsequently at the Centre Marc Bloch. In 2014, he served as a DAAD Visiting Professor at the Université de Montréal, where he was affiliated with the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies. Two years later, he was appointed Associate Professor in Contemporary History. In 2020, he returned to Berlin within the framework of a CNRS delegation at the Centre Marc Bloch, followed by guest lectureships at Europa-Universität Viadrina and Freie Universität Berlin.
His most recent publications address military captivity (Les prisonniers de guerre français en 40, ed., Fayard, 2023, Humanitaire, captivités et internement en guerre et sortie de guerre (1939–1956), ed., Matériaux pour l’histoire de notre temps, nos. 149–150), humanity and care policies (A Mixed Economy of Welfare at War: Entangling European Experiences, 1914–1950, co-ed., forthcoming in late 2025 with Palgrave Macmillan), genocides and their memories (Les génocides devant la justice allemande: droit et reconnaissance (1945–2023), co-ed., Guerres mondiales et conflits contemporains, 2023/4 and 2024/1), as well as the Adolf Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. As part of his habilitation project, he is currently completing a study of the 1960–1962 trial based on the writings and statements of the defendant.
Fabien Théofilakis is a member of the editorial boards of La Revue d’histoire de la Shoah and Matériaux pour l’histoire de notre temps. He has participated in three ANR-funded research projects, most recently ITS-STORY, which explores mixed reality and historical empathy related to internment and deportation in Nazi Europe. He is also the scientific director of the first museum dedicated to military captivity (MUCAP), scheduled to open in Normandy in 2028.
A researcher at the Centre Marc Bloch since 2020 (first as a permanent, then as an associated researcher), he was affiliated with the research focus “State, Norms, and Political Conflicts”. Since September 2025, he has served as Deputy Director of the Centre Marc Bloch on the French side and as one of the coordinators of the research focus “Europe and Democracies under Strain”.
