Susann Baller ist seit Januar 2024 Forscherin am Centre Marc Bloch. Dort hat sie eine Kooperationsstelle des Deutsche Historische Institut Paris (DHIP) inne, die von der Max Weber Stiftung gefördert wird. Zuvor arbeitete Susann Baller für das Deutsche Historische Institut Paris (DHIP), von 2021-2023 als Direktorin des Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), das mit Förderung des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) an der University of Ghana in Accra (Legon) angesiedelt ist, und von 2017-2020 als wissenschaftliche Leiterin der Transnationalen Forschungsgruppe „Die Bürokratisierung afrikanischer Gesellschaften“, das in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Centre de recherches sur les politiques sociales (CREPOS) in Dakar verortet war. Davor war Susann Baller wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und an der Universität Basel sowie Stipendiatin des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds am Institut des mondes africaines (IMAF) in Paris und an der University of Michigan sowie Fellow an der Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies. Ihr disziplinärer Schwerpunkt liegt in der Geschichte Afrikas. Ihre an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin abgeschlossene Dissertation ist unter dem Titel „Spielfelder der Stadt: Fußball und Jugendpolitik seit 1950“ (2010) veröffentlicht. Ihr Habilitationsprojekt behandelt das Thema „Politiker auf Reisen: Macht und ihre Repräsentation in Westafrika während der Dekolonisierung, 1945-62“. Neben den Themenfeldern Stadt-, Sport- und Jugendgeschichte sowie der Phase der Dekolonisierung hat sie sich darüber hinaus in den letzten Jahren mit den Themen Bürokratisierung, Wissensproduktion und Wissenschaftskooperation sowie Restitution kultureller Objekte aus Afrika beschäftigt.;

Auparavant, Susann Baller a travaillé pour l’Institut historique allemand de Paris (IHA), de 2021 à 2023 en tant que directrice du Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), basé à l’Université du Ghana à Accra (Legon) et subventionné par le Ministère fédéral allemand de l’éducation et de la recherche (BMBF), et de 2017 à 2020 en tant que directrice du groupe de recherche transnational « La bureaucratisation des sociétés africaines », basé à Dakar en collaboration avec le Centre de recherches sur les politiques sociales (CREPOS). Auparavant, Susann Baller a été chercheuse à l’Université Humboldt de Berlin et à l’Université de Bâle, bénéficiaire d’une bourse du Fonds national suisse à l’Institut des mondes africains (IMAF) à Paris et à l’Université du Michigan, et Fellow à la Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies. Son champ disciplinaire principal est l’histoire de l’Afrique. Sa thèse de doctorat, soutenue à l’Université Humboldt de Berlin, a été publiée sous le titre « Spielfelder der Stadt : Fußball und Jugendpolitik seit 1950 » (2010). Son projet d’habilitation porte sur le thème « Voyages politiques : Le Pouvoir et sa représentation en Afrique de l’Ouest pendant la décolonisation, 1945-62 ». En dehors des champs thématiques de l’histoire de la ville, du sport et de la jeunesse ainsi que de la phase de décolonisation, elle s’est investie ces dernières années dans les thèmes de la bureaucratisation, de la production de savoir et de la coopération scientifique ainsi que de la restitution d’objets culturels d’Afrique.;

Susann Baller has been a researcher at the Centre Marc Bloch since January 2024. This position is based on a cooperation with the German Historical Institute Paris and funded by the Max Weber Foundation. Previously, Susann Baller worked for the German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP), from 2021-2023 as Director of the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), which is based at the University of Ghana (UG) in Accra (Legon), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and UG, and from 2017-2020 as Head of the Transnational Research Group « The Bureaucratisation of African Societies », which was based in Dakar in cooperation with the Centre de recherches sur les politiques sociales (CREPOS). Prior to this, Susann Baller was a researcher and lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the University of Basel as well as a fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation at the Institut des mondes africaines (IMAF) in Paris and at the University of Michigan as well as a fellow at the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies. Her disciplinary focus is on African history. Her dissertation, completed at the Humboldt University in Berlin, was published under the title « Spielfelder der Stadt: Fußball und Jugendpolitik seit 1950 » (2010). Her habilitation project deals with the topic « Travelling politicians: Power and its representation in West Africa during decolonisation, 1945-62′. In addition to the fields of urban, sports and youth history and the phase of decolonisation, she has also worked in recent years on the topics of bureaucratisation, knowledge production and scientific cooperation as well as the restitution of cultural objects from Africa.
