Nach einem Master in Geschichte und Politischer Theorie an Sciences Po Paris promovierte Christina Reimann 2014 an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin mit einer Arbeit zu Verfassungswandel und Bildungsreformen in Belgien, England und Frankreich im späten 19. Jahrhundert. Nach Postdoc-Stationen in Marburg, Mainz und Göteborg ist sie seit Herbst 2019 an den Universitäten Stockholm und Södertörn tätig. In ihrer Forschung befasst sie sich mit Hafenstädten als komplexen Räumen des beschleunigten sozialen und kulturellen Wandels, als Portalen von Migration und globaler Vernetzung. Im Fokus liegen die Hafenstädte Rotterdam, Antwerpen und Göteborg im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Seit Herbst 2021 ist Christina Dozentin in Geschichte an der Universität Göteborg und war im Herbst 2023 Gastdozentin am deutsch-franösischen Campus von Sciences Po Paris in Nancy.;

Après son master en Histoire et Théorie du Politique à Sciences Po Paris, Christina Reimann a soutenu en 2014 à la Humboldt-Université de Berlin une thèse sur les réformes scolaires dans le contexte de changements constitutionnels en Belgique, Angleterre et en France à la fin du XIXe siècle. En suite à des stations de postdoc à Marburg, Mayence et Göteborg, elle travaille depuis l’automne 2019 à l’Université de Stockholm. Dans sa recherche elle s’intéresse aux villes portuaires  comme espaces complexes de changement social et culturel accéléré et comme portail de migrations et de globalisations. Sa recherche porte surtout sur les villes de Rotterdam,d‘ Anvers et de Göteborg. Depuis l’automne 2021, Christina est chargée de cours à l’Université de Göteborg et en automne 2023 elle était lectrice invitée au campus franco-allemand de Sciences Po Paris à Nancy.;

After her Master’s degree in History and Political Theory at Sciences Po Paris, Christina Reimann received her PhD in 2014 at the Humboldt-University Berlin with a thesis on education reforms and constitutional change in late 19th-century Belgium, England and France. After post-stations in Marburg, Mainz and Gothenburg she is since autumn 2019 working at the University of Stockholm. Her research deals with port cities as complex spaces of accelarated social and cultural change, as portals of migrations and globalisaton processes. She focuses particularly on the cities of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Gothenburg. Since autumn 2021, Christina has been lecturer in history at the University of Gothenburg and in autumn 2023 she was a guest lecturer at the French-German campus of Sciences Po Paris in Nancy.

Zusammenfassung

Die Bildungsreformdebatten waren Teil des Verfassungswandels im späten 19. Jahrhundert: Mit diesen Debatten reagierten die bürgerlichen Gesellschaften auf den Legitimations- und Veränderungsdruck, die auf den Verfassungen lasteten, und trugen damit zugleich zur Dynamik des Verfassungswandels bei. Auf welche Weise dies geschah und welche Rolle organisierte gesellschaftliche Gruppen wie die Bildungsligen dabei spielten, ist Gegenstand dieses Bandes. Die Autorin analysiert den Verfassungswandel für den Zeitraum zwischen 1865 und 1904 als einen sozio-kulturellen Prozess und zeigt, wie sich der Wandel der bürgerlich-liberalen Verfassung als ein Wechselspiel zwischen emanzipatorischen und beharrenden Kräften entfaltete. Dazu untersucht sie die Bildungsdebatten in Belgien, England und Frankreich als Verfassungsdebatten und aus „verfassungskultureller“ Perspektive. In den Blick genommen werden die belgische und französische Ligue de l’enseignement, die englische National Education League sowie die National Education Association, die die Debatten ihres jeweiligen Landes maßgeblich prägten. Inwiefern trugen die Bildungsligen mit ihren Beiträgen zur Bildungsdebatte zum Verfassungswandel bei? Inwiefern waren sie an dem Legitimitätsverlust und der Beharrungskraft der Verfassungen beteiligt? Wie verfestigten sie die Ausschlussmechanismen der bürgerlich-liberalen Verfassung, und inwiefern trugen sie auch zu ihrer Überwindung bei?;

Les débats sur la réforme de l’éducation s’inscrivent dans le cadre du changement constitutionnel de la fin du XIXe siècle: Avec ces débats, les sociétés civiles réagissaient à la pression de légitimation et de changement qui pesaient sur les constitutions, et contribueaint du même coup à la dynamique du changement constitutionnel. Comment cela s’est produit et quel rôle ont joué les groupes sociaux organisés tels que les ligues de l’enseignement dans ce processus est le sujet de ce livre. Il analyse le changement constitutionnel pour la période entre 1865 et 1904 comme un processus socio-culturel et montre comment les changements de la constitution bourgeoise-libérale se sont déroulés en tant qu’interaction entre des forces émancipatrices et persistantes. À cette fin, l’étude examine les débats sur la réforme d’éducation en Belgique, en Angleterre et en France en tant que débats constitutionnels et dans une perspective de « culture constitutionnelle ». Au centre de l’étude se trouvent les Ligues de l’enseignement belge et française, la National Education League anglaise et la National Education Association, qui ont considérablement façonné les débats sur l’education dans leurs pays respectifs. Dans quelle mesure les ligues de l’enseignement ont-elles contribué au changement constitutionnel par leurs contributions au débat sur l’éducation ? Dans quelle mesure ont-ils participé à la perte de légitimité et à l’inertie des constitutions ? Comment ont-ils solidifié les mécanismes d’exclusion de la constitution bourgeoise-libérale, et dans quelle mesure ont-ils également contribué à les surmonter ?;

The education reform debates were part of the constitutional change in the late 19th century: With these debates, civil societies reacted to the different forms of pressure that weighed on the liberal constitutions, and at the same time contributed to the dynamics of constitutional change. How this happened and which role organized social groups such as the education leagues played in this process is the topic of this book. The study analyzes the constitutional change in the period between 1865 and 1904 as a socio-cultural process and shows how the change of the bourgeois-liberal constitutions unfolded as an interplay between emancipatory and persistent forces. To this end, the book examines the education debates in Belgium, England and France as constitutional debates and from a “constitutional culture”-perspective. The centre of study are the Belgian and French Ligues de l’enseignement, the English National Education League and the National Education Association, which significantly shaped the education debates in their respective countries. To what extent did the education leagues contribute to constitutional change with their contributions to the education debates? To what extent were they involved in the loss of legitimacy and the inertia of the constitutions? How did they solidify the exclusion mechanisms of the bourgeois-liberal constitution, and to what extent did they also contribute to overcoming them?
