Lucie Fabry

Lucie Fabry is a PhD Student in Philosophy at École Normale Supérieure of Paris, in the Mathesis section of République des Savoirs (CNRS, ENS, Collège de France). Since October 2020, she is an associate doctoral fellow at the Centre Marc Bloch. Her research focuses on French epistemology in the 20th Century. Her doctoral thesis, prepared under the supervision of Pr. Sophie Roux (École Normale Supérieure) and Pr. Philippe Sabot (University of Lille), studies the debates which surrounded the introduction of formalization and mathematical reasoning in the human sciences. It is centered on an epistemological reading of the work of Claude Lévi-Strauss and its reception, which questions the way in which this anthropologist presented formalization as what would allow human sciences to achieve scientificity. Since her Master degree at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Lucie Fabry also studies the work of Gaston Bachelard. She was in charge of the scientific edition of Le Matérialisme rationnel at the Presses Universitaires de France, currently in press. She also took Bachelard’s epistemology as a starting point to investigate its relation to the early 20th Century philosophy of science (“Phenomenotechnique: Bachelard’s critical inheritance of conventionalism”, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, june 2019) and his reception since the 1960s (with Sophie Roux, Bachelardismes et anti-bachelardismes en France : controverses épistémologiques des années 1960, to be published at Éditions Classiques Garnier). During her stay at the Centre Marc Bloch, she will start working on a project on the reception of Max Weber’s philosophy of science in France. She will focus on the references made to Weberian concepts in the epistemological work of Jean-Claude Passeron.;

Lucie Fabry est doctorante en philosophie à l’École normale supérieure, au sein de la composante Mathesis de La République des Savoirs (USR 3608). Elle est doctorante associée au Centre Marc Bloch depuis octobre 2020, dans le cadre d’une bourse de recherche longue durée du DAAD. Ses recherches portent sur l’épistémologie française au xxe siècle. Sa thèse, préparée sous la direction de Sophie Roux (ENS) et de Philippe Sabot (Université de Lille), porte sur les débats qui ont entouré le projet d’introduire des modes de raisonnement mathématiques et des formalismes dans les sciences humaines et sociales. Elle y propose une lecture épistémologique de l’œuvre de Claude Lévi-Strauss, qui restitue les termes dans lesquels cet auteur a présenté la formalisation des sciences humaines comme une condition de leur accès à la scientificité, et les met en dialogue avec des positions concurrentes. Parallèlement à ce travail de thèse, Lucie Fabry poursuit des recherches sur l’épistémologie de Gaston Bachelard qu’elle a commencées pendant son Master. Elle a été chargée de l’édition critique du Matérialisme rationnel, qui paraîtra à la fin de l’année 2020 aux Presses universitaires de France. Elle a également pris l’épistémologie bachelardienne comme un fil conducteur pour interroger, en amont, sa relation avec la philosophie des sciences du premier xxe siècle (« Phenomenotechnique: Bachelard’s critical inheritance of conventionalism », Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, juin 2019) et, en aval, la réception de cette épistémologie dans la pensée française des années 1960 (avec Sophie Roux, Bachelardismes et anti-bachelardismes en France : controverses épistémologiques des années 1960, à paraître aux éditions Classiques Garnier). Au cours de son séjour au Centre Marc Bloch, elle commencera également à travailler sur un nouveau projet relatif à la réception de l’épistémologie de Max Weber en France. Elle se concentrera sur la question du rôle des concepts wébériens dans l’épistémologie de Jean-Claude Passeron.;
