Welcome Roman Borysov – Fellowship Ukraine
This November, the Centre Marc Bloch (CMB) welcomes Roman Borysov in Berlin, as part of the CEFRES Fellowship Ukraine programme. Launched in 2023, the programme is jointly run by two French research centres abroad, CEFRES in Prague and the CMB in Berlin, within the UMIFRE network (joint research units of the CNRS and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs). It is carried out in partnership with the Ministry, the French Embassy in Ukraine and the CNRS, and supports Ukrainian researchers through stays at several French research institutions in Europe.
Roman Borysov holds a PhD and is Assistant Professor at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
His research focuses on educational trajectories, family capital and agency in wartime, drawing on the sociology of education, youth studies and migration studies. He works mainly with qualitative methods (in-depth interviews and focus groups) and builds on Bourdieu’s theory of capitals and Emirbayer and Mische’s relational theory of agency.
In 2025, with the support of a CMB/CNRS fellowship, he studied the educational trajectories of Ukrainian refugee schoolchildren in European host countries. His current project, Between Here and Elsewhere: Projective Agency, Educational Preferences, and Migration Orientations of Ukrainian Adolescents in Wartime, turns to adolescents aged 13–16 who have remained in Ukraine. It explores how they and their parents form educational preferences and migration orientations, and how wartime uncertainty affects their ability to imagine and plan their educational futures. The study draws on online focus groups held separately with adolescents and parents.
We hope you enjoy your stay with us!
