Olena Palko: Between two powers: Ukrainian intellectuals serving Bolshevism In my research, I try to answer the question of how the cooperation between national radical intellectuals with the Bolsheviks influenced the establishment of the Soviet authority in Ukraine in the early 1920s. The argument of my research is that some Ukrainian intellectuals, being affiliated to the party not only through their membership cards but also through ideological conviction, share to some extent a responsibility for the establishment of the Bolshevik rule in Ukraine. Those intellectuals contributed to the development of the Bolshevik ideology elaborating it through every day political practice in the Soviet Ukraine. Therefore, Bolshevism and the Soviet regime should be discussed not only as something external to national intellectual history introduced by the means of violence but also through the investigation of internal factors that facilitated the establishment of the Soviet system.
