Katrin Herms promoviert in Soziologie an der Universität Lausanne unter der Betreuung von Laurence Kaufmann und Francesca Musiani. Am Centre Marc Bloch hat sie von 2020 bis 2023 als Doktorandin des CNRS im ERC Projet „Socsemics“ an mehreren Fallstudien zur möglichen Existenz von digitalen Echokammern gearbeitet. Seit Dezember 2023 ist sie assoziierte Doktorandin und aktives Mitglied des Forschungsschwerpunkts „Staat, Recht und politischer Konflikt“. Katrin hat ein Bachelor Studium in Journalistik an der TU Dortmund absolviert und hält einen trinationalen Masterabschluss in Studien der grenzüberschreitenden Kommunikation und Kooperation an den Universitäten Saarbrücken, Metz und Luxemburg. Vor dem Beginn ihrer Doktorarbeit war Katrin als freie Journalistin (u.a. für Deutsche Welle, WDR und SR2 Kulturradio) tätig und hat mehrere Jahre lang beim Deutschen Roten Kreuz den Internationalen Jugendreiwilligendienst mit frankophonen Partnern organisiert und gestaltet. Ihr Dissertationprojekt befasst sich mit Polarisierungstendenzen und Solidarität in der Corona-Debatte in Deutschland und Frankreich. Katrin ist ehemalige Research Fellow in der Forschungsgruppe „Dynamiken digitaler Nachrichtenvermittlung“ am Weizenbaum-Institut Berlin. Im Wintersemester 2023/24 war sie Lehrbeauftragte für den Grundkurs Soziologische Theorie im Fachbereich Allgemeine Soziologie und Kultursoziologie von Prof. Dr. Andreas Reckwitz an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Im Wintersemester 2024/25 lehrt sie Digitalkulturen am Sciences Po Médialab, Campus Reims. Katrin ist außerdem Mitglied im Juniorlabor « Collectif d’Étude des Discours sur l’Écologisme en France » des LabEx SMS, Université Toulouse.;

Katrin Herms prépare un doctorat en sociologie à l’Université de Lausanne sous la direction de Laurence Kaufmann et Francesca Musiani. Au Centre Marc Bloch, elle a travaillé de 2020 à 2023 en tant que doctorante du CNRS dans le projet ERC „Socsemics“ sur plusieurs études de cas concernant l’existence possible de chambres d’écho numériques. Depuis décembre 2023, elle est doctorante associée et membre active de l’axe de recherche „État, normes et conflits politiques“. Katrin a obtenu une licence en journalisme à l’Université technique de Dortmund et détient un master trinational en études de la communication et de la coopération transfrontalières des universités de Sarrebruck, Metz et Luxembourg. Avant de commencer sa thèse de doctorat, Katrin a travaillé comme journaliste indépendante (entre autres pour Deutsche Welle, WDR et SR2 Kulturradio) et elle a organisé et conçu pendant plusieurs années le service de volontariat international de la jeunesse entre des partenaires francophones et la Croix-Rouge allemande. Son projet de thèse porte sur les tendances de  polarisation et de solidarité dans le débat sur le Covid-19 en Allemagne et en France. Katrin est une ancienne „research fellow“ dans le groupe de recherche „dynamiques d’information numérique“ au Weizenbaum-Institut de Berlin. Au semestre d’hiver 2023/24, elle était chargée de cours en théorie sociale dans le département de sociologie générale et de sociologie de la culture du professeur Andreas Reckwitz à l’université Humboldt de Berlin. Au semestre d’hiver 2024/25, elle enseignera les cultures numériques à Sciences Po Médialab, campus de Reims. Katrin est également membre du laboratoire junior “ Collectif d’Étude des Discours sur l’Écologisme en France “ du LabEx SMS, Université Toulouse.;

Katrin Herms is preparing her PhD in sociology at the University of Lausanne under the supervision of Laurence Kaufmann and Francesca Musiani. From 2020 to 2023, she worked for the ERC project „Socsemics“ on several case studies investigating the possible existence of digital echo chambers. This research activity was funded by CNRS and hosted at the Center Marc Bloch. Since December 2023 she is associate postgraduate and active member of the research focus „The State, Political Norms and Political Conflicts“. Katrin holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from TU Dortmund University and a trinational Master’s degree in Cross-Border Communication and Cooperation Studies from the Universities of Saarbrücken, Metz and Luxembourg. Before starting her doctoral thesis, Katrin worked as a freelance journalist (e.g. for Deutsche Welle, WDR and SR2 Kulturradio) and organized and designed the International Youth Volunteer Service with francophone partners at the German Red Cross for several years. Her dissertation project deals with polarization tendencies and solidarity in the Corona debate in Germany and France. Katrin is former Research Fellow in the group on „Digital News Dynamics“ at Weizenbaum Institute Berlin. In winter term 2023/24 she was a lecturer for Social Theory in the department of General Sociology and Cultural Sociology headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Reckwitz at the Humboldt University of Berlin. In the opening semester 2024/25 she teaches Digital Cultures at Sciences Po Médialab, Campus Reims. Katrin is also a member of the „Collectif d’Étude des Discours sur l’Écologismeen France“ of the LabEx SMS, Université Toulouse.

Zusammenfassung

Motiviert durch die viel diskutierte Frage, ob die Covid-19-Pandemie soziale Polarisierung verstärkt hat, umfasst diese Arbeit drei Fallstudien, darunter (1) eine teilnehmende Beobachtung und Feldinterviews mit Straßenaktivisten in Deutschland und Frankreich, (2) eine qualitative und quantitative digitale Diskursanalyse der Nachrichtenrezeption in französischsprachigen Zitationsketten auf Twitter, deren Methodik im Rahmen des ERC-Projekts „Socsemics“ am Centre Marc Bloch entwickelt wurde, und (3) einen Ansatz zur Untersuchung der Selbstdarstellung der einflussreichsten Nutzerprofile mit intermediären Positionen in digitalen Nachrichtenkanälen.;

Motivé par la question très débattue de savoir si la pandémie du Covid-19 a renforcé la polarisation sociale, ce travail comprend trois études de cas, dont (1) une observation participante et des entretiens de terrain avec des activistes de rue en Allemagne et en France, (2) une analyse de discours numérique qualitative et quantitative de la réception des nouvelles dans les chaînes de citation francophones sur Twitter, dont la méthodologie a été développée dans le cadre du projet ERC „Socsemics“ au Centre Marc Bloch, et (3) une approche pour étudier l’autoreprésentation des profils d’utilisateurs les plus influents ayant des positions intermédiaires dans les chaînes de diffusion de nouvelles numériques.;

Motivated by the widely discussed question of whether the Covid-19 pandemic has increased social polarization, this thesis comprises three case studies, including (1) participant observation and field interviews with street activists in Germany and France, (2) a qualitative and quantitative digital discourse analysis of news reception in French-language citation chains on Twitter, the methodology of which was developed as part of the ERC project „Socsemics“ at the Centre Marc Bloch, and (3) an approach to study the self-presentation of the most influential user profiles with intermediary positions in digital news chains.
