Climate justice and the North-South divide: the impact of climate change on health in African countries

This round table focuses on how climate change will and is already undermining human health, food and water security across countries in Africa. While these countries have, historically, contributed almost nothing to climate change, they are likely to face acute health crisis in the forthcoming decades, either resulting from the exacerbation of pre-existing risks or from new, emerging challenges. How does rising temperatures and changing climatic conditions affect the population’s health? What are the expected impacts in terms of drought, food insecurity and floods? How do national authorities and healthcare systems equip themselves to map their magnitude and socio-spatial distribution? What policy capacities and resources do they draw upon, both internally and externally, to support the development of mitigation and adaptation strategies, to strengthen healthcare systems and services, while at the same time improving accessibility, whether in large densely populated metropolises such as rural areas? What supporting measures have been taken so far by European countries?  Particular attention will be given to controversies about North-South cooperation and to the legacies of Eurocentric models of intervention, dating from the colonial as well as from the post-colonial period. This Round table will address these questions by bringing together academic experts from across different disciplinary backgrounds and both continents.
