„The Outsiders: Refugees in Modern European History“ Philipp Ther (University of Vienna) Moderation: Nikola Tietze (Centre Marc Bloch) Drawing on biographical case studies, Professor Philipp Ther will give us a broad perspective on flight and refugees in European history, ranging from religious persecutions in the 15th century to the 2015 “refugee crisis,” in an attempt to better understand the current political and social strife surrounding that question. The talk will delve into the reasons behind flight such as religious conflicts, nationalism and political persecution and the factors of exclusion and inclusion in Europe. Against this historical backdrop, the talk will address current European policies and debates around the integration of refugees and will provide possible lines of approach. This event is part of the interdisciplinary conference (Post)Migration and Conflicts / (Post-)Migration und Konflikte which will take place online on February 10 & 11, 2021.
