CfA: Postdoctoral Research Position

March 11

Reference number: F-0321

Salary Scale: EG 13-3 TV-L (HU)

Full-Time Position, starting 1 September 2021

Application Deadline: 11 April 2021

Centre Marc Bloch e.V. (CMB) is the Franco-German Research Centre for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Berlin. CMB is an affiliated institute (An-Institut) of the Humboldt University of Berlin and a CNRS research unit, with an interdisciplinary profile and international outlook. Since its foundation in 1992, CMB has been a model institute for European research cooperation. Covering a wide range of social sciences and humanities perspectives, it focuses on changes in European societies and on the role of Europe in global contexts.

We are now offering a full-time Postdoctoral research position (Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in) for a fixed term of 30 months, starting 1 September 2021. Place of employment is Berlin.

The position-holder will be part of the Franco-German research project “Multiple Crises. Covid-19 and the Entanglements of Public Health, Security and Ecology in Europe”, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and will contribute to the sub-project “Resource Scarcity in Existential Crises” (working title).

Taking as its point of departure the ongoing health crisis, the project “Multiple Crises” explores the entanglement and interaction between different crisis phenomena in the areas of Public Health, Security, and Ecology. Based on an interdisciplinary perspective combining approaches from the social sciences and the humanities, as well as on Franco-German dialogue, this project investigates both the current forms and the historical and societal dynamics of these crisis phenomena in Europe.

The sub-project “Resource Scarcity in Existential Crises” looks at these questions in the context of a concrete case study within the broader European horizon. It centres around three levels of investigation: societal perceptions of crisis (1), crisis analyses of scientific experts (2), and crisis actions of political institutions and decision-makers (3).

Job Description

The position involves independent implementation of the sub-project “Resource Scarcity in Existential Crises” in the framework of the interdisciplinary research project “Multiple Crises” and in close cooperation with another sub-project on “Climate Security in Existential Crises”. Aside from developing an individual research project, whose exact content will be determined in consultation with the Directorate, the implementation of the sub-project also comprises the contribution to the overall project.

Important elements of the position are the organization of conferences, workshops, network meetings and larger-scale public events in Germany, France and Europe, as well as additional knowledge transfer and international networking activities in cooperation with other team members and with the CMB working group “Energy-Climate” (https://cmb.hu-berlin.de/en/research/translate-to-english-energie-/-klima). Moreover, regular contribution to the general research activities of CMB is expected (research seminars, integration into the Research Focus, etc.).

Requirements

The successful applicant will

  • hold an above-average PhD degree in the social sciences or humanities,
  • possess a proven track-record relevant to the thematic area “Resource Scarcity in Existential Crises”,
  • be self-reliant and able to work independently, as well as have very good organizational, communication and teamworking skills,
  • have a good command of the German and French languages (required due to the bilingual structure of CMB). A very good command of English is desirable.

As an equal opportunity employer, CMB intends to promote women and men in accordance with statutory requirements. For this reason, suitably qualified women are specifically invited to apply. Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preferential treatment.
