Annette Henninger – The modernization of Germany’s gender regime 2005-2021: Protection against labor market discrimination remains weak

Starting in 2005 with reforms in family policy to improve the reconciliation of employment and care for working parents, this push for modernization spilled over to (at least moderate) labor market interventions and antidiscrimination policies for sexual and gender minorities from 2013 onwards. The first part of the lecture gives an overview on these policy reforms. The second part points out that in spite of these changes, the institutionalization of (intersectional) antidiscrimination policies remains week, and there is a lack of effective protection against labor market discrimination. Germany has still a long way to go to successfully combat its high gender wage gap – and to figure out how discrimination based on sex and based on ethnicity interact on the labor market.
