Discourses about climate routinely speak of „the“ GHG emissions of a person, but what are „her“ emissions and can she be hold responsible for them? The common understanding is that a person is responsible for the emissions arising from her consumption. These however cover emissions from very different activities. We develop guidelines to assess the responsibility of emissions from a moral point of view along the dimensions of cause, control and information. We introduce the idea of degrees of responsibility to better fit the plurality of emission-generating activities, and test it on some common emission examples.   Commentaire : Jessica Nihlén Fahlquist, PhD Associate professor & senior lecturer at Centre for Research Ethics and Bioethics, Uppsala Universitet. Antonin Pottier is a associated professor at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris and member of the Chair Energy and Prosperity. His research focuses on the socio-economic aspects of climate change, the role of economics in decision making and how economics deals with the environment.
