Katharina Fritsch studierte Internationale Entwicklung (BA) und Politikwissenschaft (Diplom) an der Universität Wien und promovierte mit Oktober 2018 an derselben in Vergleichender Politikwissenschaft. Seit April 2023 ist sie Schrödinger Stipendiatin (post-doc) und forscht zu Ausnahmezuständen, postkolonialen Machtverhältnissen und (Selbst-)Regierungsweisen von Protestakteur*innen in Frankreich (Cesdip/Gyancourt). Von 2012-2014 war sie Teil des Postgraduate Lehrgangs „Sociology of Practices“ am Institut für Höhere Studien (IHS), Wien, sowie 2014-2017 wissenschaftliche Projektmitarbeiterin im Forschungsprojekt „Popular Culture in Translocal Spaces“, am Institut für Afrikawissenschaften (Universität Wien). Von 2019-2022 war sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Forschungsprojekt "Digitalizing Youth Politics" am Institut für Europapolitik und Demokratieforschung (Universität für Weiterbildung Krems). Weiter ist sie immer wieder als Lehrbeauftragte (Politikwissenschaften, Internationale Entwicklung, Afrikawissenschaften und Gender Studies) an der Universität Wien tätig. Ihre Forschungsinteressen sind postkoloniale Migration und Diaspora, Populärkultur, intersektionelle Machtverhältnisse, postkoloniales Frankreich, Ausnahmezustände und Protestbewegungen. Sie interessiert sich weiter für methodologische Fragen im Bereich feministischer und dekolonisierender Ansätze zu Forschung.;

Katharina Fritsch a étudié développement international (BA) et sciences politiques (Diplom) à l'Université de Vienne et a obtenu son doctorat en sciences politiques comparées en octobre 2018. Depuis avril 2023, elle mène une recherche, dans le cadre d'une bourse post-doctorale "Schrödinger", sur l'état d'urgence, les relations postcoloniales et les processus d'être gouverné et de se gouverner parmi les movements sociaux en France (Cesdip/Guyancourt). De 2012 à 2014, elle a participé dans le programme doctorale "Sociologie des pratiques" à l'Institut des études avancées (IHS), Vienne, et de 2014 à 2017, elle a travaillé sur le projet de recherche "Culture populaire dans les espaces translocaux" à l'Institut des études africaines (Université de Vienne). De 2019 à 2022, elle était assistante de recherche dans le projet de recherche "Digitalizing Youth Politics" à la Université de formation continue de Krems (Autriche). Elle est regulièrement chargée de cours à l'Université de Vienne. Ses recherches portent sur les migrations postcoloniales et la diaspora postcolonial, la culture populaire, l'intersectionnalité, la France postcoloniale, l'état d'urgence et les movements protestataires. Elle s'intéresse aussi à la décolonisations de méthodologies de recherche.;

Katharina Fritsch studied International Development (BA) and Political Science (Diplom) at the University of Vienna and received her doctorate in Comparative Political Science in October 2018. Since April 2023 she holds a Schrödinger fellowship and works on states of emergencies, postcolonial power relations and (self-)governing among protest actors in France (Cesdip/Gyancourt). From 2012-2014 she was part of the postgraduate course "Sociology of Practices" at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Vienna, and from 2014-2017 she worked on the research project "Popular Culture in Translocal Spaces" at the Institute for African Studies (University of Vienna). From 2019-2022, she was a research assistant in the research project "Digitalizing Youth Politics" at the department of European Policiy and the study of Democracy (Danube University Krems). She has been teaching at the University of Vienna in Political Science, African Studies, Gender Studies and International Development. Her research interests include postcolonial migration and diaspora, popular culture, intersectional power relations, postcolonial France, states of emergencies and protest movements. She is also interested in feminist and decolonising research methodologies.

Zusammenfassung

In meiner Dissertation beschäftige ich mich mit Mobilisierungen ‚franko-komorischer Diaspora’ in Politik und Kultur in Marseille. Dabei fokussiere ich auf Mobilisierungen von ‚Community’ und auf die intersektionellen Machtverhältnisse die diese prägen. Theoretisch beziehe ich mich auf postkoloniale und intersektionelle Ansätze zu ‚Diaspora’, ‚Kultur’ und ‚Identität’, ein Foucault’sches Verständnis von Diskurs, Dispositiv und Biopolitik sowie performative Ansätze zu Subjektivierung. Basierend auf diesem theoretischen Ansatz, analysiere ich was ich als Dispositiv der Kommunitarisierung fasse, d.h. Prozesse von (Selbst-(Regierung) franko-komorischer Communities entlang von Diskursen, Praktiken, Institutionen und Subjektivierungsprozessen. Die jeweiligen (Selbst-)Regierungsprozesse werden entlang von drei Dimensionen – Räumen, Kulturmärkten und Politiken der Kommunitarisierung – analysiert. Methodologisch fokussiert diese Dissertation auf kulturelle und politische Veranstaltungen, in denen ‚franko-komorische Community’ in Marseille mobilisiert wird. Ethnografischen Ansätzen folgend besteht mein Materialkorpus aus qualitativen Interviews mit in den Events involvierten Akteur*innen, Protokollen teilnehmender Beobachtungen sowie (audio-visuellen) Dokumenten der Events. Ein methodischer Fokus auf Veranstaltungen versteht die Forscherin als integralen Teil dieser, was Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen von Positionalitäten und Machtverhältnissen in postkolonialen Forschungskontexten mit sich bringt. Das empirische Material wurde entlang Dispositiv-bezogener Dimensionen –  beispielsweise Bedeutungen, Praktiken oder Identitätskategorien – kodiert und mit den drei analytischen Dimensionen des Dispositivs der Kommunitarisierung in Beziehung gesetzt. Die Analyse der Räume zeigt Assoziierungen franko-komorischer Communities mit bestimmten Räumen, konkret Marseille, den ‚Nördlichen Bezirken’ und ‚Veranstaltungssälen’, als das Resultat von Policies und Praktiken franko-komorischer Communities. Die Analyse von Kulturmärkten beschreibt die Musikrichtung twarab als diasporischen Kulturmarkt und die Talentshow Etoiles Rasmi als geprägt von Diskursen und Praktiken von ‚kulturellem Entrepreneurship’. Die Analyse von Politiken betont die Rolle ethnisierter Communities als politische Ressource für franko-komorische Politiker*innen. Alle drei Dimensionen deuten auf die Rolle der sozialen Kategorie ‚Ethnizität’ in Bezug auf Kommunitarisierungsprozesse hin, die sich wiederum entlang anderer sozialer Kategorien, vor allem Lokalität/Altersklassen, Klasse, Geschlecht und Generation, unterscheiden. Im Zuge der Arbeit argumentiere ich, dass Kommunitarisierungsprozesse einen Kontext von postkolonialem Frankreich reflektieren, in denen ethnisierte Communities als das ‚Andere’ einer ‚nationalen Community’ markiert sind. Die Dissertation trägt somit zu Debatten zu Biopolitik, Intersektionalität und Formen von (Selbst-)Regierung in postkolonialen Kontexten bei.;

My dissertation examines the mobilisation of ‘Franco-Comorian diaspora’ in politics and culture in Marseille. I focus on the mobilisation of notions of ‘community’ and how such mobilisations shape and are shaped by intersectional power relations. Theoretically, I draw on postcolonial and intersectional approaches to ‘diaspora’, ‘culture’ and ‘identity’, a Foucauldian notion of discourse, dispositive and biopolitics as well as performative approaches to subjectivation. Based on this theoretical approach, I analyse what I refer to as a dispositive of communitarisation, that is, processes of (self-)governing of Franco-Comorian communities through discourses, practices, institutions and subjectivation processes. These (self-)governing processes are analysed along three dimensions, namely spaces, cultural markets and politics of communitarisation. Methodologically, this dissertation focuses on cultural and political events mobilising ‘Franco-Comorian community’ in Marseille. Following ethnographic approaches, the empirical material consists of qualitative interviews with actors involved in the events and protocols of participant observations and (audio-visual) documents related to the events. By focusing on events, the researcher is understood as an integral part of events, thus enabling a continued engagement with questions about the positionalities and power relations in postcolonial research contexts. The empirical material was coded in terms of dispositive-related dimensions – e.g. meanings, practices or identity categories – associated with the three dimensions of the dispositive of communitarisation. The analysis of spaces shows how the association of Franco-Comorian communities with certain spaces, more specifically Marseille, the ‘Northern Districts’ and ‘event halls’ is a result of policies and practices of Franco-Comorian communities. The analysis of cultural markets discusses the musical practice of twarab as a diasporic cultural market and the talent show Etoiles Rasmi as a reflection of discourses and practices of ‘cultural entrepreneurship’. The analysis of politics emphasises the role of ethnicised communities as a political resource for Franco-Comorian politicians. All three dimensions stress the role of the social category of ethnicity in communitarisation processes, which are also affected by other social categories, especially locality/age classes, class, gender and generation. In my dissertation, I argue that communitarisation processes reflect a context of postcolonial France, where ethnicised communities have been marked as the ‘Other’ of the ‘national community’. My research and approach hence contributes to debates on biopolitics, intersectionality and forms of (self-) governing in postcolonial contexts.
