Die Soziologie muss ihre gesellschaftliche Funktion, ihre interdisziplinäre Anschlussfähigkeit und ihr Interventionsspektrum im Kontext der aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozesse neu bestimmen. "Soziologischer Experimentalismus", verstanden als eine Umstellung des Faches von der Krisen- zur Erfahrungswissenschaft, ist eine Antwort auf diese Herausforderung. Experiment und Erfahrung gehören zusammen. Als Erfahrungswissenschaft wird Soziologie damit zu einer Praxis, die Erfahrungen nicht nur beobachtet, sondern zur Voraussetzung jeder Art von Erkenntnis macht. Die Zukunft des soziologischen Experimentalismus liegt folglich in der Aufgabe, attraktive Laboratorien für entsprechende Kooperationen zwischen Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft dauerhaft bereit zu stellen.

English presentation:

In the book I am translating John Dewey's theory of experimental knowledge into social theory through the lenses of already existing sociologies. To my knowledge, it is the first attempt to make Dewey a sociologist and to grasp not only his theory of education, or of democracy, but make his methodology of research work for sociologists, as well as for other collectives interested in social and cultural issues and problems. I conceive "experience", a still underdevelopped but core term in sociology, as a key methodological concept to link actors everyday with sociologist's research experiences. Through a symmetrical approach, inspired by practice theory,  pragmatism, international anthropology and STS, ethnography is the prominent empirical, though not exclusive method which can get it's whole epistemical impact through a relational methodology, capable to comprise actors capacities (Boltanski & Thévenot), as well as human and non-human factors of dealing with the environment (Beck, Descola, STS). The key concepts of my experimentalist approach are "experience", "trials" and "cooperation", enacted by social scientists and actors through differentiated modes of "reflexivity", "openness for revision", and "capacity for building structures". "Experimentalism and Sociology" intervenes thus with an optimistic approach in an era of increasing political, moral and epistemic uncertainty. It argues for a re-set of common sociological grounds towards a transdisciplinary laboratory of mutual learning in heterogenous settings. Finally, it provides instruments for inter- and transdisciplinary research and argues for a transformative agenda within established academic borders. An english translation of the book is scheduled for 2020.
