Réunissant 58 auteurs de 12 nationalités, l’ouvrage propose une analyse multidisciplinaire et un tour d’horizon de ce phénomène global qu'est la mise en cause de la liberté scientifique. S'il porte principalement sur la région centre-est de l'Europe, il couvre d'autres régions (Russie, Asie centrale, Maghreb, Afrique, Allemagne, France, cas des Ouïghours...), afin de faire ressortir analogies et différences dans les conceptions de la liberté académique d'un pays à l'autre, mais aussi dans les modes très variés de qualification d'un problème quelconque comme une atteinte à la liberté académique.

L'ouvrage propose également une revue critique des modes de défense (et de promotion !) des libertés académiques, afin de répondre à l’enjeu crucial de constitution de celles-ci en bien public d’une société moderne. Il comprend enfin un cahier sur l'histoire du Centre français de recherche en sciences sociales (CEFRES) de Prague.

Résumé

Cet ouvrage explore les pratiques langagières et les représentations identitaires de «　citoyens mobiles　» au sein de l’espace européen. La mobilité intra-européenne débouche sur des rencontres humaines, dont sont issus des couples mixtes, eux-mêmes à l’origine de familles bi-/plurinationales. Ces migrants d’un genre nouveau renvoient à un phénomène migratoire encore récent et très minoritaire, encore peu étudié. En raison de la forte dimension géopolitique que revêtent les langues et les cultures, l’identité européenne est ici abordée à travers la transmission, l’acquisition et la gestion des compétences bi-/plurilingues et bi-/pluriculturelles. L’objectif est d’explorer la manière dont se décline, dans le contexte familial, le lien entre pratiques langagières et culturelles, d’un côté, et représentations identitaires, de l’autre.
L’analyse s’appuie sur des entretiens menés auprès de membres de familles franco-allemandes de Paris et Berlin – représentés au sein de trois générations. Issues des migrations intracommunautaires, ces familles sont à la fois des produits et des acteurs de l’intégration européenne, dont elles incarnent l’esprit au niveau d’existences individuelles et familiales. De plus, étant donné la particularité de la relation franco-allemande dans le contexte européen, on peut supposer que ces familles se reconnaissent dans une identité propre, qu’elles construisent et expriment à travers des pratiques langagières et culturelles spécifiques.

Mediatized Witnessing, Spectacles of Pain, and Reenacting Suffering: The Armenian Genocide and Humanitarian Cinema

Abstract

Focusing on the conception, production, distribution (and disappearance) of Ravished Armenia (1919) and Alice in Hungerland (1921), two silent films on the Armenian Genocide from a gendered perspective, this chapter combines media history (“technologies of witnessing”) with the history of global humanitarianism. These two oldest movies on the genocide were shot with the initiative of the Near East Relief in order to raise donations and international awareness through the reenactment of suffering, sensationalization of violence, and victimized Armenian bodies. Both films enjoyed a short-lived fame and revenue, followed by disappearance and subsequent oblivion. The early humanitarian cinematic representation of the Armenian genocide sheds light on the ferocious mediatization and marketing strategies of humanitarian agencies, specifically as to how they targeted the corporal bodies of their lead orphan actresses, Arshalouys Mardigian and Esther Razon, through extensive bodily interventions, enormous workload, and reenactment of suffering.

Children at the Margins of Labour Migration in Füruzan’s Works after Germany

In 1975, novelist and short story writer Füruzan came to West Berlin following the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Service and spent the next five years on and off in Berlin until 1980. Following her travels, she published her journalistic essays/memoirs Yeni Konuklar (1977) and Ev sahipleri (1981), her children’s book Vom rotgesprenkelten Spatzen (1980), and her novel Berlin’in Nar Çiçeği (1988). While she gained a transregional perspective on issues concerning labour migration and class during her time in Germany, her works resulting from it introduced these subjects to her readership in Turkey. Her Yeni Konuklar and Ev sahipleri in particular provide a significant amount of data on the subject of labour migration to Germany, while her Vom rotgesprenkelten Spatzen and Berlin’in Nar Çiçeği elaborate upon the inherent large cultural shifts on both sides resulting from labour migration. This article examines the works Füruzan produced following her stay in Germany in the 1970s. It discusses the ways in which she presents the perspectives of the children as previously underexplored material on issues concerning global labour mobility. It looks at how children’s experiences reveal a more complicated reality in regards to social and cultural integration with an emphasis on the difficulties that they face and go unnoticed. Moreover, it also argues for the distinct potentialities of integration rendered possible through the relationship between the immigrant children and the elderly Germans due to a shared experience of marginalisation.

The Ambivalent Translator: Towards a History of Psychoanalytic Translations

An influential strand within modern translation studies has drawn a portrait of the translator as a deeply ambivalent figure, charged with the challenging task of preserving the foreign of the original work within the new version, and thus as inevitably torn between two languages and cultures. The case of the first English translations of Freud's work, undertaken by Abraham Arden Brill, is used here to demonstrate that a detailed historical and philological analysis of textual practices can help us situate the figure of the ambivalent translator in its proper context, namely within a historical model of translation. Retracing this model and its ramifications also has larger implications for an approach that should allow us to understand the relational, affective and institutional bonds connecting authors, translators and readers in global processes of cultural transmission of the human sciences.
