How to cover the war. The Israeli-Palestinian-Conflict in the German and French Media

March 25 | 18:00

Panel discussion Paris-Berlin-Tel Aviv

Since the terrorist attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023 and Israel's violent response in the Gaza Strip,  media from all over the world have devoted particular attention to the conflict. Reporting on this war is not easy, as it raises political, moral and ethical issues, including the question of journalistic neutrality. This panel discussion is not about the conflict itself (its origins, the complex history of the region, etc.), but about the way in which newsrooms and correspondents on the ground deal with the conflict in their daily work. Journalists and experts in reporting on the conflict participate in the conference. The discussion, which will take place in three locations in English, offers the opportunity to scrutinize the current journalistic work: What discussions affect journalists on the ground when an editorial team decides to report on a particular aspect of the conflict or use specific terminology? How can national political dynamics generate audience demand or expectations? How can a balanced coverage of the conflict be maintained? A special look is taken at international newsrooms where journalists do not always share the same "national" view of the area, especially in French or German newsrooms.

The discussion will take place online and in English. Please register: https://framaforms.org/registration-for-the-online-event-how-to-cover-the-war-the-israel-palestine-conflict-in-the-german

The event is organised in cooperation with CIERA, Deutsches Historisches Institut Paris and the Center for German Studies (DAAD) of the Hebrew University of Jérusalem.
