Optimising conduct of life? Practices of biohacking in Germany, Finland and France

Biohacking is a form of “do-it-yourself-biology” where people experiment with their own body in order to optimize their performances, their well-being, their physical appearance or their productivity. The phenomenon of biohacking brings to bear current societal trends like digitalization and biotechnological change, the promises of the neuro-sciences and the growing influence of “citizen science” and “open source” activism. With special regard to questions of gender this project aims at investigating the meaning, the consequences and the ambivalences of biohacking. It thereby delivers a contribution to the question of current forms of subjectivation and their link to macrosocial processes. The project involves qualitative interviews with biohackers from Germany, Finland and France and the participant observation of biohacking meetings.
