Biography

Malte Griesse is leading a research group on "Early Modern Revolts as Communicative Events" at the University of Konstanz. Currently he holds a senior research fellowship at the Centre Marc Bloch after having substituted the chairs of East-European History in Konstanz and of Early Modern European History at the Humboldt University in Berlin. He is particularly interested in communication history in early modern, modern and contemporary Europe, with a particular focus on Eastern Europe and Russia. Apart from a monograph (habilitation theses defended in April 2016 in Konstanz) that revises the 17th century crisis from the perspective of transnational media flows and is to be published in German and English, he has written his PhD at the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris on communication and the formation of opinion and critical capacity under Stalin. Published in 2011 in French, the book is currently also translated into English under the tentative title: Communication, Judgment and Action under Stalin: the Individual at the Interface of Personal Ties and the Political System. For two years he has started a new broader project on Life-Stories in Motion, where he examines the transnational horizons and mobilities of subaltern ego-documents in the 18th and 19th century.

Life-Stories in Motion : Subaltern autobiographical practices in 18th and 19th centuries (Main project at the CMB)

The project examines ego-documents (memoirs, diaries and family books, letters, interrogation records) in their communicative contexts – with an emphasis on subaltern actors in the Russian multi-ethnic empire of the 18th-19th centuries. By subalterns I mean social actors whose lives were determined by subservience to others and by dependency from their own labor: farmers, serfs, slaves, craftsmen, workers etc. Often an external stimulus was necessary to tell one's own life story. For in popular milieus in particular, writing about one's own life was often considered presumptuous – the flight of Icarus, as a Catalan tanner called it in the 17th century. External stimuli were often needed to account one's own life story, through court hearings, but also through politically committed intellectuals who encouraged subalterns to write.
In many cases, mobility was both cause and motive for writing, and I roughly distinguish geographical, social (upward and downward) and ideological mobility (i.e. mobility in terms of religious conversion and of changing secular political attitudes). Closely related to the theme of mobility is the role of labor/work, but even though it determined the conditio humana subalterna, it remained underexposed in the narratives until well into the 19th century. Wasn't labor the divine punishment for original sin? However, in parallel, new work ethics developed in Protestantism and among Russian Old Believers - and in economic thinking, work became the basis of value creation.
