Biography

Marc Bloch Chair (SoSe 2020)

Régis Schlagdenhauffen studied sociology, European ethnology and history at the University of Strasbourg and the Humboldt University of Berlin. Before joining EHESS, he taught sociology at the Universities of Lorraine, Strasbourg, Paris Dauphine and Sciences Po.

Since 2004, Régis Schlagdenhauffen has been working on places of remembrance in memory of the victims of Nazism and the Holocaust. After a research stay at the CRFJ, he completed a doctoral thesis in cotutelle at the Marc Bloch Centre (defended in 2009 under the supervision of Anne-Sophie Lamine and Wolfgang Kaschuba). His work proposed a socio-historical analysis of the forms of commemoration of the homosexual victims of Nazism in Western Europe. Following this, he extended his research on the intertwining of individual and collective memory through the study of personal documents (including the diary of the jurist and sexologist Eugène Wilhelm alias "Numa Praetorius").

His current research focuses on how institutions, social groups and individuals categorize sexual practices, acts and identities. In order to grasp the judiciarisation of the social world, he seeks to understand how collectives of actors have seized the sexual categories used by justice and medicine, how they have transformed or even rejected them. The growing attention to the notion of equality and the ensuing discussions on repression, acceptance and recognition of sexual identities therefore anchor Régis Schlagdenhauffen's research at the heart of a historicized political sociology that is attentive to the role played by institutional and international actors.

Projects

Over the past years, Régis Schlagdenhauffen's research has led him to understand the tension between the dicible and the unspeakable in autobiographical accounts and writings (in particular through the reading of the unpublished diary of the bisexual jurist and sexologist Eugene Wilhelm) in order to examine how gender, age and sexual orientation contribute to a contemporary reconfiguration of the mechanisms of sexuality.

At the same time, he continues his research on the Europeanization of the category "group of victims of Nazism" from the point of view of its political and pedagogical dimensions and he develops new researches on the 1st homosexual emancipation movement 

 

Activities

Régis Schlagdenhauffen est membre du comité de lecture de la revue Clio : histoire, femmes et sociétés et de la revue Genre, sexualité et société. Il anime par ailleurs à l’EHESS le séminaire "Comment parler de sexualité en entretien ?" et enseigne la sociologie à Sciences Po, Paris.

The first homosexual movement in Berlin: Between collective memory, legacy and oblivion

This seminar-project examines the legacy of the first homosexual movement founded in Berlin at the end of the 19th century. At that time, members of the movement defended revolutionary ideas: among others, the decriminalization of homosexual relationships, the opening of marriage to homosexual couples, the recognition of intersex and transgender persons. In this seminar, the effort to build a "modern sexual culture" is questioned through the use of personal documents, archives and publications of members of the movement.
