ONLINE – Joshua Clover: "What the People Want, Violence, Tactics"

07. Juni | 18:00

Mit: Joshua Clover (University of California, Davis)
Kommentar: Leyla Dakhli (CNRS, CMB)

While it has had internal rhythms and local particularities, it is hard to dispute that the period 2008-2021 comprises a period of intensified struggles at a planetary level, featuring continuities across years and regions, but without any easy consistency. However, certain problems persist and haunt struggle after struggle. This talk, launching from the Arab Spring, the Standing Rock Encampment, and the George Floyd Rebellion, will hope to engage three problems in particular: the limits of the slogan “the people want the fall of the regime,” the question of violence, and the emergent tactic of struggles to come. These three problems form a braid which cannot be disentangled; the question remains how it might hold us together.

Joshua Clover is the author of seven books, including the forthcoming Roadrunner (Duke, 2021) as well as Riot.Strike.Riot: the New Era of Uprisings, a political economy of social movements, with recent editions in French, German, Turkish, and Swedish. He is a student of the narrowing paths to revolution, and currently Professor of English and Comparative Literature at University of California Davis as well as Affiliated Professor of Literature and Modern Culture at University of Copenhagen.
