The profound economic and energy implications of the war in Ukraine for European societies have brought the question of distributive justice to the centre of political debate as rarely before. For a long time, critical voices have seen an urgent need for action to halt the erosion of 20th-century socio-political achievements that have guaranteed a minimum level of equality and participation since the middle of the century. On a global scale, the debate on the basic principles of distributive justice is firmly linked to the economic and socio-political consequences of decolonization, manifested in the division of the world into global South and global North.

The economists and historians Charlotte Bartels (Berlin), Thomas Piketty (Paris) and Nikolaus Wolf (Berlin) will discuss the topic of inequality and participation as one of the particularly pressing socio-political challenges of the present. They will explore the complex background of the current controversies and discuss the extent to which the economic policy crises of the past decades at the national, European and global level can be understood as challenges for society as a whole, closely linked to the question of the principles according to which we want to shape our social coexistence.
