After 1945, the resistance to National Socialism and fascism occupied a dominant place as a positive master narrative in the public sphere of many European societies. In the 1980s and 1990s it became a much more controversial and contested issue, and today the memory of resistance often seems to meet with little or no interest, or it is confronted with various kinds of rejection and revisionism or new forms of political instrumentalisation. Based on the examples of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France and Germany, we will discuss what challenges the memory of resistance faces in our societies and what differences and similarities we can observe in this regard within Europe. Is it important to emphasise and/or reinvent the memory of resistance today, and if so, why and for which purposes? What dimensions of resistance to Nazism and fascism during World War 2 seem important to us? What possibilities are there to convey a memory of resistance that takes into account its complexity and avoids or counteracts glorification, simplification and political abuse?
Organised by crossborder factory, the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, CIFE – Centre international de formation européene and the Jasenovac Memorial Site, in cooperation with the Centre Marc Bloch, with the support of the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ) and the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF).
