Biography

Daniela Heimpel is Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute and associated researcher at the Centre Marc Bloch. Before joining the EUI, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the CMB, co-responsible for the research focus 1 "The State, Political Norms, and Political Conflicts". Previously, she has worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Montreal Centre for International Studies (CÉRIUM) and as a research associate at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (project "Franco-German Forum for the Future"; direction: Patrizia Nanz). In 2020, she has defended a PhD in political theory on the idea of a European citizenship education and on EU education policies and discourses (Université de Montréal / Université de Nantes, 2020). In addition, she co-directed a collaborative research project on "challenges of pluralism" in contemporary liberal societies in Europe and North America ("Les défis du pluralisme", 2014-2018).

Her current research project focuses on citizen participation in Europe. In particular, she is interested in the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE; 2021-2022) and the "new generation" of European citizens' panels the European Commission is organizing from 2022 to 2023. She is also a member of the EUI Forum on Democratic Participation and the Future of Europe (EUI-STG Democracy Forum) and of the Constituent Network of the Democratic Odyssey project. In addition, she will develop a new research project on citizenship education in Italy, Germany and France. Her broader research interests include education, citizenship, citizen participation, democracy, demoi-cracy, pluralism, cosmopolitanism, transnationalism, European integration and EU education policies.
