Biographie

Ich erforsche politische Dynamiken der Katastrophenentstehung, -prävention und -bewältigung. In meiner Doktorarbeit beschäftigte ich mich mit der humanitären Governance im Zusammenhang mit Dürren und Überschwemmungen in autoritären Konfliktregionen, wobei ich Feldforschung in Äthiopien, Myanmar und Simbabwe betrieb. Derzeit arbeite ich mit (Geo-)Wissenschaftlern und Praktikern zusammen, die an der Verbesserung des indonesischen Tsunami-Warnsystems beteiligt sind, und untersuche die Prozesse und die Machtdynamik, die bei der Durchführung internationaler, inter- und transdisziplinärer Katastrophenforschung eine Rolle spielen. Zu meinen weiteren Forschungsinteressen gehören Entpolitisierung, Mobilisierung der Zivilgesellschaft, die Rolle, die Katastrophen bei sozio-ökologischen Übergängen spielen können, und Gewalt, die auf "subtile" Weise ausgeübt wird.

Bisherige akademische aber auch nicht-akademische Arbeitsstationen waren die Universitäten von Amsterdam und Kapstadt, das International Institute of Social Studies in Den Haag, die Internationale Föderation des Roten Kreuz Roten Halbmonds in Genf und das Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.

The politics of disaster creation, prevention and response

My research approaches disasters such as deadly floods or wildfires as socio-politically constructed and as symptoms of our currently unsustainable societies. It specifically deals with how various actors materially and discursively draw back on disasters to advance their own agenda - for instance, through the (depoliticised) framing of disaster root causes and solutions. I am particularly intrigued by the puzzle of why disasters currently do not play a more substantial role in bringing forward socio-ecological transformation processes.
