'Denkbild' and map, Walter Benjamin

Four types of cartographic anxiety (1900-1949)

Since Early Modern Times, maps provide one of the central models for Western epistemology. As critical cartographers underline, the reliability of maps – guaranteed by tradition, exact measurements and state control – is based on an elimination of non-knowledge. However, doubt and discomfort persist and remain tied to figures of cartography. The reverse side of cartographic reason is commonly called “cartographic anxiety” (Gregory 1994, Pickles 2004, Crampton 2010). In cultural studies – both their Anglo-American and continental varieties – these reservations did not receive due attention when it came to turning the cartographic metaphor into a “powerful tool” (P. Mitchell 2008). This neglect is all the more striking because the critique of maps and mapping practices is an integral part of cultural studies. Especially in Germany, central figures of “Kulturwissenschaften” insisted on the importance of historical contexts (Weigel 2002). Given this situation, an examination of the cartographic metaphor in a specific historical configuration might provide a critique of current practices. The central question of my study is thus: Which form does cartographic anxiety take in the “world history models” of four thinkers – all working in Germany in the period of the “Second Thirty Years’ War”? These four thinkers have become part of the methodological canon of continental cultural studies, directly or indirectly: Walter Benjamin, Aby Warburg, Franz Rosenzweig, and Fernand Braudel. They further have in common that they all regarded their own approaches as “cartographies”. I will focus on the ambivalences of these approaches. In referring back to mapping and other media practices of Early Modern Times, they show that the epistemological condition of mapping, in short: “cartographic reason” has become problematic long before the representational critique of poststructuralism.
