Pragmatism and the Wide View of Democracy

The aim of this book is to provide a fresh, wider, and more compelling account of democracy than the one we usually find in conventional contemporary political theory. Telling the story of democracy as a broad societal project rather than as merely a political regime, Frega delivers an account more in tune with our everyday experience and ordinary intuitions, bringing back into political theory the notion that democracy denotes first and foremost a form of society, and only secondarily a specific political regime.

The theoretical shift accomplished is major. Claiming that such a view of democracy is capable of replacing the mainstream categories of justice, freedom and non-domination in their hegemonic function of all-encompassing political concepts, Frega then argues for democracy as the broader normative framework within which to rethink the meaning and forms of associated living in all spheres of personal, social, economic, and political life. Drawing on diverse traditions of American pragmatism and critical theory, as well as tackling political issues which are at the core of contemporary theoretical debates, this book invites a rethinking of political theory to one more concerned with the political circumstances of social life, rather than remaining confined in the narrowly circumscribed space of a theory of government.

Im deutschsprachigen Raum steckt die Erforschung der Geschichte gehörloser Menschen als marginalisierte, sprachlich-kulturelle Minderheit noch in den Anfängen. Dieser Band bietet einen innovativen Blick auf Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz seit dem 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart. Unter Einbeziehung der Sichtweisen gebärdensprachlich gehörloser Menschen behandeln die Beiträge Bildungschancen und -methoden, Menschenrechte, Erfahrungen der Unterdrückung und Autonomie sowie die Selbstorganisation in verschiedenen politischen Systemen. Damit wird ein Grundstein gelegt für eine Gehörlosengeschichte im deutschsprachigen Raum, die sich ihrer vielfältigen transnationalen Wurzeln und Einflüsse bewusst ist.

Policy Transfer and Norm Circulation: Towards an Interdisciplinary and Comparative Approach

Policy Transfer and Norm Circulation brings together various fields in the humanities and social sciences to offer a renewed analysis of policy transfer and norm circulation, by offering cross-regional case studies and providing both a comprehensive and innovative understanding of policy transfer.

The book introduces a constructive interdisciplinary dialogue and comparative approach highlighting the partial and fragmented understanding of policy transfer, and the questions and challenges in the study of policy transfer in three parts. Firstly, notions of transfer and circulation, including law, (political) economy, sociology and history; secondly, a focus on European studies and the transfer of norms, both within and outside the EU; and finally, an examination within a broader IR context.

Ottoman Children and Youth in World War I

Described by historians as a "total war," World War I was the first conflict that required a comprehensive mobilization of all members of society, regardless of profession, age, or gender. Just as women became heads of households and joined the workforce in unprecedented numbers, children also became actively engaged in the war effort. Adding a new dimension to the historiography of World War I, Maksudyan explores the variegated experiences and involvement of Ottoman children and youth in the war. Rather than simply passive victims, children became essential participants as soldiers, wage earners, farmers, and artisans. They also contributed to the propaganda and mobilization effort as symbolic heroes and orphans of martyrs. Rebelling against their orphanage directors or trade masters, marching and singing proudly with their scouting companies, making long-distance journeys to receive vocational training or simply to find their families, they acquired new identities and discovered new forms of agency. Maksudyan focuses on four different groups of children: thousands of orphans in state orphanages (Darüleytam), apprentice boys who were sent to Germany, children and youth in urban centers who reproduced rivaling nationalist ideologies, and Armenian children who survived the genocide. With each group, the author sheds light on how the war dramatically impacted their lives and, in turn, how these self-empowered children, sometimes described as "precocious adults," actively shaped history.

Point de fuite - Le méditerranée et la crise europénne

L’image de l’Acropole en ruine fut longtemps l’emblème d’une politique visant à la mise à distance d’un Sud qui semblait fatalement vicié par la crise. Or la proposition de cette politique d’austérité – économie, rigueur, privation – ignorait non seulement le vécu réel des sociétés européennes en question, mais aussi la véritable profondeur de la crise elle-même. Les phénomènes omniprésents de scission sociale et de radicalisation ne laissent plus de doute : la dimension de la crise dépasse largement les seules questions de politique budgétaire. La défaillance de l’État et la détresse humanitaire dans les sociétés méditerranéennes font part d’une crise générale européenne. L’espace de la Méditerranée rend visible, comme sous une loupe, les problèmes d’avenir du monde global. L’Europe doit donc se repenser à partir du Sud : comment voulons-nous vivre ensemble ?

Despite the wealth of empirical research currently available on the interrelationships of gender and labor, we still know comparatively little about the forms of classification and categorization that have helped shape these social phenomena over time. Categories in Context seeks to enrich our understanding of how cognitive categories such as status, law, and rights have been produced, comprehended, appropriated, and eventually transformed by relevant actors. By focusing on specific developments in France and Germany through a transnational lens, this volume produces insights that can be applied to a wide variety of political, social, and historical contexts.
